Cookies for Katniss

March 23, 2012

Whenever I read a book like The Hunger Games, I get totally immersed in that world. I want to taste the biscuits from Mellark’s bakery; I want to feast my eyes on pale purple melon. I want to live it as I read it. With the movie comes out this weekend, we’ll finally get to see if the Hollywood version lives up to all our imaginations. I wanted to make a simple biscuit for a Hunger Games feast. These biscuits are divine with a cold glass of milk and a perfect treat while reading.  Continue Reading…

Loveheart Biscuits

February 8, 2012

Love Heart sweets were one of my favourite treats as a child. We used to swap them in the playground and used to feel very adult and grown-up, exchanging our secret messages. Some of the messages on the sweets, like ‘Gee Whizz’ and ‘Cutie Pie’ weren’t exactly part of our young Irish lexicon, so they felt all the more exotic to us. They also tasted yummy and fizzy and gave us that sugar high that we craved as kids. I ate a Love Heart sweet recently and couldn’t get over how sweet it was. I guess I’ve grown up, and my tastes have changed. Messages have changed too on the newer Love Heart sweets and you are more likely to see Text me and Email me instead of Gee Whizz. It’s funny to see how these old fashioned sweets are keeping up with the times. Continue Reading…

Alfajores

December 19, 2011

I’ve made a few different types of biscuits before, but like everyone else I’m always looking for something new. Then I discovered Alfajores in a local Argentinean café and it was love at first bite. Alfajores (pronounced alfa-HOAR-ays) are popular cookies in many Latin American countries especially at Christmas time. There are loads of different familial and regional versions of Alfajores, but this version with dulce de leche and coconut is my personal favourite. The biscuits are so small, light and crumbly and they are so much nicer than a heavy mince pie. They can be made in different sizes, but I like them no bigger than an espresso cup. They’re crumbly and delicate and are the perfect complement to a rich, dark cup of coffee. I always try out a new batch on my work colleagues (and the OH’s colleagues) and these were especially popular – that’s always a good sign. They’re simple to make and I guarantee people will be asking for more.   Continue Reading…

Pecan, Cranberry + White Chocolate Chip Cookies

December 7, 2011

I’ve had Georgia on my mind since visiting family in Atlanta for Thanksgiving. We took a road trip to Savannah and Charleston and discovered beautiful cotton fields, pecan trees and some amazing countryside. It couldn’t have been a more relaxing and enjoyable break. The food from the Low Country was for the most part great. It certainly was plentiful. The delicious seafood in Charleston and Savannah, my sister’s home-cooking in Atlanta (still dreaming about that squash and chipotle soup) and good old fashioned Southern cooking. Continue Reading…

Chocolate Toffee Crisp Squares

November 10, 2011

These delicious treats are kind of a cross between a chocolate rice crispy cake and a toffee chocolate square. I use two types of chocolate as I think the dark chocolate offsets the sugary sweetness of the toffee. These treats are light ,crispy and fantastically moreish. They will keep for a few days in an airtight tin – that’s if you can resist eating them. Continue Reading…

Guilty Pleasures

November 3, 2011

Last week was the first time I had ever baked for my own sweet stall! It was certainly an adventure and also a great learning experience. I have a whole new respect for the amount of work that goes into producing food for a market stall. The hardest part, it has to be said, was the shopping and hauling my giant stash of sugar to the car! The theme of the market was “Guilty Pleasures” and was all about those sweet and salty snacks that we all love from time to time. My guilty pleasures were honeycomb clusters, coconut bites and some delicious biscuits. Continue Reading…
