Cocktail

I’m Just An Old Fashioned Girl

December 9, 2011

When we were in America we picked up a rather large bottle of Woodford Reserve Bourbon…..which can only mean one thing, ‘Old Fashioned’ time. This cocktail is probably one of the oldest in the book, but definitely one of my favourites.

It stared out being the OH’s preferred tipple, but slowly and surely I too became hooked – especially to help digest the Southern cuisine. It’s so hard to get a decent old fashioned out, that the OH started to make and perfect them at home. This is our old fashioned recipe and never fails to disappoint.  Ever since my first sip, this drink reminded me of Christmas. The taste of oranges and whiskey and the bright red cherry somehow conjure up Christmas for me. Try it for yourself and see what you think.

Here’s how:

 – 1 tsp granulated sugar
 – 2-3 drops Angostura bitters
 – 1 splash of water
 – ice cubes
 – 50ml bourbon
 – 2 thin slices orange peel – remove pith
 – 1 maraschino cherry

Method

Add sugar and Angostura bitters to glass with a splash of water and muddle until the sugar has dissolved. Add half the bourbon and 2 ice cubes and mix for 1a few seconds. Add the remaining bourbon and more ice (2 – 4 cubes).

Remove the pith from the orange peel and gently squeeze over the glass to release the oils from the peel. If you want to be a bit flash, squeeze the peel into the glass over the flame from a lighter for that burnt orange aroma. Drop the peel into the glass and add the cherry.
