I love Halloween as a celebration. It’s a welcome distraction from cold, dark evenings and impending winter. All the bright colored pumpkins and spooky decorations bring some cheer while we are waiting to get ready for Christmas. Most adult Halloween parties most likely happened over the weekend. However, if you feel like a spooky libation on Halloween night, this pomegranate Martini is a good one to try. The licorice spiders are simple to make and slightly scary if you are afraid of spiders 🙂

Ingredients

(Serves 2)

• 2 fl oz. of Vodka
• 1 fl. oz of Cointreau
• 6 fl. oz of pomegranate juice

To Serve

• 2 teaspoons of fresh pomegranate seeds
• Licorice Spiders

Method

Put the vodka, Cointreau and pomegranate juice in a cocktail shaker with 2 cubes of ice. Shake the cocktail shaker to combine the ingredients and strain the cocktail into two martini glasses. Add a small spoon of pomegranate seeds into each  glass. Garnish with a licorice spider.

Licorice spiders

To make the licorice spiders you will need the following:
• Black string licorice
• Scissors
• Cocktail pick

To make the licorice spiders, use a scissors to cut the licorice into 5 pieces – 4 pieces should be 2 inches (5cm) long. The fifth piece should be 9 inches (23 cm) long
Gather the four short pieces of licorice in your hand and wrap the long piece of licorice around the middle of the bundle twice. Tie a knot in the long piece of licorice and leave one long tail of licorice to attach to your cocktail pick. When you have made the cocktail, tie the long piece of licorice to the cocktail pick and place it in the glass, with the licorice spider hanging over the side.
