Christmas Stocking Fillers

December 17, 2013

Stasty_Gifts_2013

It’s that time of the year again, when we are all rushing around to finish that last minute Christmas shopping. Perhaps you need just a few token gifts or some Christmas stocking fillers.  The types of gifts that I really enjoy giving and receiving are special or exotic ingredients or some clever tools or gadgets for the kitchen.

If your friend or family member enjoys food and cooking, they will always appreciate a good quality ingredient for their pantry. Try not fall into the trap of buying some unknown brand claiming to be gourmet or one of those ready-made Christmas food hampers. Often these kinds of gifts will languish in the cupboard for many Christmases to come like the ghost of Christmas past. Do a little research and buy ingredients that are trusted and enjoyed by cooks everywhere.  Even though something like a tin of pimenton is a small gift, it might just remind that person of a great meal they enjoyed or a memorable foreign holiday every time they use it in a dish.

A clever kitchen tool is also a good option and might just save the person some time and effort in the kitchen. They will also be reminded of you every time they use it. Here are a few of my favorite special ingredients and kitchen gadgets that always bring a smile to my face.

Salt

1.       A great skillet pan

A great skillet is a gift for life! I just received  a beautiful copper based Anolon skillet and I really enjoy using. A good skillet, like a sharp knife makes cooking a whole lot easier.

2.       Lagrima Vanilla

I just recently discovered this vanilla and I am now a convert.  It tastes very natural and pure. What I also love about this product is that they leave the vanilla pod in the bottle so when you finish the bottle; you still have a delicious vanilla pod to cook with.

3.       Oxo Good Grips Rolling Pin

I have had many rolling pins in my life, and most of them I hated. I have finally found a rolling pin that is solid and easy to manage. Oxo Good grips generally make great products and this one is no exception. I have a feeling that this rolling pin will last for quite some time.

4.       Fleur de Sel

A good quality salt is always a great ingredient to have in the pantry. Whether it is a fancy French salt or a delicate Himalayan salt – a quality salt will benefit any dish.

5.       AeroPress

The OH did actually get this coffee maker as a present and we absolutely love it. It’s so simple to use – it makes a really great coffee and is relatively easy to clean up. We now use our AeroPress more than our French press. I think this is a great gadget and I love using it.

6.       Smoked Paprika

We put this stuff on everything – Potato wedges, chili, guacamole, burger etc. This smoky and subtle spice is a must have item in your pantry.

7.       Bunbury Boards

What’s great about these chopping boards is that every board tells a story. You get a serial number with your board so you can look it up and see what tree it came from and how they are replacing the trees. You can also have the board engraved. We got one of these as a wedding gift and every time I use it I am reminded of the day.

8.       Butternut Squash Seed oil

I have talked about this oil before on the blog. It’s nutty and addictive. It really enhances  a stir-fry or a salad. I’ve even used it in soups. I love this oil and have tried many of their products and really enjoyed them all.

9.       Slipmat

This is just a simple and useful baking tool. Gone are the days, where my cookies are stuck to the work surface. This amazing material allows you roll out dough and pastry without it getting into a sticky mess. I never bake cookies or pastry without this.

10.   Apple Balsamic Vinegar

This apple balsamic is one of my favorites. It will make  your salad dressing taste delicious. It’s rich, it’s moreish and it’s great value.
