Christmas Gifts for Foodies

December 21, 2011

If you are anything like me you will have left all your Christmas shopping to the very last minute. Then I usually dash around in a mad scramble trying to get the perfect gift in hot sweaty shops crowded with other insane people like me. Some year I will learn, some year I will start my shopping in November, buy everything online, and only buy thoughtful and considerate gifts…some year! Continue Reading…

Alfajores

December 19, 2011

I’ve made a few different types of biscuits before, but like everyone else I’m always looking for something new. Then I discovered Alfajores in a local Argentinean café and it was love at first bite. Alfajores (pronounced alfa-HOAR-ays) are popular cookies in many Latin American countries especially at Christmas time. There are loads of different familial and regional versions of Alfajores, but this version with dulce de leche and coconut is my personal favourite. The biscuits are so small, light and crumbly and they are so much nicer than a heavy mince pie. They can be made in different sizes, but I like them no bigger than an espresso cup. They’re crumbly and delicate and are the perfect complement to a rich, dark cup of coffee. I always try out a new batch on my work colleagues (and the OH’s colleagues) and these were especially popular – that’s always a good sign. They’re simple to make and I guarantee people will be asking for more.   Continue Reading…

OH So Spicy Ketchup

December 14, 2011

I must admit I have somewhat of an obsession with ketchup. I’m the type of person that eats chips only if they are saturated with ketchup. Otherwise I just can’t eat them. I know it’s bad, I know it’s processed and full of salt, sugar and other unmentionables, but I love it. I’m not sure why I’m so addicted, it could be a nostalgia thing. As a kid I was only allowed chips and ketchup as a special treat, so maybe it’s the forbidden factor. Continue Reading…

I’m Just An Old Fashioned Girl

December 9, 2011

When we were in America we picked up a rather large bottle of Woodford Reserve Bourbon…..which can only mean one thing, ‘Old Fashioned’ time. This cocktail is probably one of the oldest in the book, but definitely one of my favourites. Continue Reading…

Pecan, Cranberry + White Chocolate Chip Cookies

December 7, 2011

I’ve had Georgia on my mind since visiting family in Atlanta for Thanksgiving. We took a road trip to Savannah and Charleston and discovered beautiful cotton fields, pecan trees and some amazing countryside. It couldn’t have been a more relaxing and enjoyable break. The food from the Low Country was for the most part great. It certainly was plentiful. The delicious seafood in Charleston and Savannah, my sister’s home-cooking in Atlanta (still dreaming about that squash and chipotle soup) and good old fashioned Southern cooking. Continue Reading…

Po’boy

December 2, 2011

When I came home from the bread making course, I was literally laden down with homemade fresh baguettes. I wanted to make something special with them, as I had put so much work into making them. I also had a pot of homemade mustard mayonnaise in the fridge. So it was clear, it would have to be some sort of a sandwich…some sort of gourmet sandwich. The first thing that came to mind was a po’boy, which is funny as a po’boy is considered a poor man’s (poor boy) sandwich, originally created in Louisiana. But for me, the po’boy is one of the scrummiest, most wonderful sandwiches you can get. It is traditionally comprised of French baguette, mayonnaise, deep fried shrimp/ oysters and lettuce.
