I have to admit, I do like gin and tonics. I am pretty fussy though. There are only one or two brands of gin that I really like, I also like a lot of ice and there has to be a decent wedge of lemon. Without the lemon, it’s just not a gin and tonic. I am that crazy person that spends about three minutes squeezing all the lemon juice out before I dare take sip. For me, the lemon is kind of an integral part, so it got me thinking – what about a gin and tonic with home-made lemonade? So, for you dear readers I tackled this particular conundrum, and experimented with a lemonade gin and tonic. In all truth, it was pretty delicious and it makes gin and tonics even more refreshing for the summer. My recipe below is for perfect home-made lemonade. This lemonade is really the basis of so many great summer drinks – Arnold Palmers, Margarita’s, and now gin and tonics. I added a spring of mint to this lemony gin and tonic which added a wee bit of mint flavor and a fresh minty scent. So, if you are stuck in a cocktail rut, this lemonade g and t might just be your new summer drink.
Ingredients
Home-made Lemonade
(makes a litre and a half of lemonade)
- 240mls of fresh lemon juice
- 180g of sugar
- 1500mls of water
Method
- Put the lemon juice and the sugar in a large saucepan over a medium heat.
- Heat the lemon juice and sugar until the sugar has dissolved.
- Take off the heat, add the water and leave to cool.
- To make the lemonade, gin and tonic, pour a shot of gin into a glass.
- Add some ice, some of the cooled lemonade, and top with a splash of tonic. The ratio of tonic and lemonade depends on how lemony you like it.
